 Sales Tax / Duty

US Customers: Sales tax is charged when an item is mailed to any address in Arizona.  Sorry, the government says we have to.

International Customers: Rules regarding duty vary by country.  Quite a few countries do not charge duty on antiques that are 100 years or older.  Your countries custom office would know if any duty or import tax exists for your specific country.

This calculator can help you determine if there will be duty or tax required by your country: www.dutycalculator.com.  For items over 100 years old, choose “Antique, Art, & Collectibles” in the product category, “Antiques over 100 years old” in the next drop down, and “Other Antiques” in the third product category drop down.  If the item is less than 100 years old, use the “Jewellery & Watches” product category, “Jewellery” in the next drop down, and the entry in the last drop down that closely matches your item.

The customer is responsible for payment of any duty or import tax.  We will not mark a package as a gift on a customs form.  We will declare full value.  We require a phone number for all international shipments, so that your customs office can contact you if they need to.  Please be advised that clearing customs and international shipping, can have delays that are completely out of our control, and we can not guarantee international shipments will arrive by a specific date.

Authenticity / Testing Methods

We always strive to be honest, regarding the age, condition, and the materials that were used to create the item.  We mostly deal in vintage and antique items, but occasionally will carry some modern items.  If the item is modern, it will be clearly marked as such.  You will receive an invoice that lists the information about the item.

We employ the following methods to authenticate the items we sell:

  • loupe inspection,
  • acid tests (gold, silver, and platinum),
  • for all stones, we use the “Gemlogis CIEL 3-in-1 Electronic Diamond, Moissanite & Gemstone Tester”, with the added “Gemlogis Pistachio Referential Meter”, which analyzes simulants and colored gemstones.
  • Legal for Trade Scale, registered with the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures.

We have completed the Diamond Grading and Colored Gemstone Identification courses through International Gemological Services, located in Scottsdale Arizona.

We may also compare the item to other items, in our ever growing library of antique jewelry books.

We have several gemologists we routinely work with.  If we are ever unsure about the age or condition of an item, we have the item inspected by at least one of them, before listing the item for sale.  We guarantee the authenticity of the items we sell.  If there is ever a concern, please feel free to contact us.

Condition of Items for Sale

Antique, vintage, and estate jewelry has been previously worn and enjoyed, and therefor will have signs of use and age.  One of our favorite pieces is an exquisite child’s blue and white guilloché locket, engraved June 22, 1919, with a small dent on the back.  The piece came from the estate of a lady, with excellent taste in clothes, who lived in New York.  It’s not hard to imagine, a little girl chewing on her necklace, while waiting on her mother to finish shopping, thus denting the necklace with a tooth.  Those thoughts are what make antique jewelry so cherished and unique.  If any condition items are noted during our inspection, we will include the details in the items description.

All gemstone and diamond: colors, weights, and clarity are determined in the mounting, unless we note otherwise.  This is done to preserve the item as much as possible.  Since this determination is made in the mounting, the determinations are approximate and treatments to enhance the stone/pearl may not be identifiable.  If a grading or value is provided on a written appraisal, please keep in mind that two different appraisers can come to two different conclusions.  Grading is subject to many variables: Clarity, cut, fluorescence, inclusions, proportions, shape, weight, etc., and each stone is completely unique.

We strive to be honest in our descriptions and accurately date the items we sell.  The age of items are determined by the style of the item, the makers mark and\or hallmarks if present, the findings used to construct the item, how the stones were faceted, wear\patina, etc.  As with fashion today, styles of jewelry were introduced and continued for a varying number of years, depending on the popularity of the style and the maker.  Even then, a style sometimes experienced resurgence in popularity, which increased the number of years the style was found.  Cut steel is a perfect example of a style that continued for decades.  We will include any information on how we determined the age of the item in the item description.

If you ever have questions on an item, please don’t hesitate to email us.  We will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
