Mid 1800's Victorian Cut Steel Earrings
A rare pair of Mid 1800's Victorian Cut Steel Earrings in excellent condition, featuring lovely rosettes and leaves in a desirable hoop shape. These earrings are from about 1840 - 1860, making them around 154 to 174 years old. Cut steel was often worn to balls, where there was candle light, or low light conditions, since the individual faceted steels reflects light better than diamonds. These earrings have been polished back to a high shine. When we acquired these earrings, they had early 1900's screw backs (replacements, not original), which were uncomfortable, so we had them switched back to Sterling Silver ear wires using a laser. They are much more comfortable to wear now. There appears to be a cut steel that was repaired.
Cut Steel earrings can sometimes hang a bit lower on the ear lobe than modern earrings, due to the weight on the front side of the earring. If you prefer your earrings to sit higher, putting on an earring back can help hold the earring in a higher position. We will include a set of earrings backs with these earrings, in case you want them.
