Victorian Hair Comb - Cut Steel
This Victorian Hair Comb made out of Cut Steel is a collector item, that is becoming hard to find, particularly cut steel in good condition. Two pronged, hinged Victorian hair combs were popular in the 1870's - 1880's. The hinge allowed for the angle of the decorative top to be adjusted to suite the elaborate up-do hairstyles worn to formal Victorian balls. Cut steel in candle light, or low light conditions, reflects light better than diamonds. This particular piece has no rust and light surface scratching to the comb piece. The comb visually appears to be made of horn. In Victorian times, horn from cows, was used as an alternative to tortoiseshell. The horn was boiled to remover its natural color and then painted or stained to imitate tortoiseshell mottling. This Victorian hair comb would be a classy addition to an up-do and a business suit.
